It's a Boy . . . and a Girl!!!
Well I did it. My life long dream of owning a Chincoteague pony has come true . . . times 2. From the first time my parents and I camped down on Assateague Island with the wild ponies, when I was 2, I have always dreamed of having one. So this year since my husband and I have bought 18 acres and are building the Too Good Acres farm we decided that this was as good of a year as any.
So my mother and I packed up the truck, hooked up the horse trailer, and off to Chincoteague, VA or BUST!!! We got there Monday, July 23 (my 30th B-day) after a 7 hour drive, dumped the trailer at the Fire chief's house and headed out for a B-day dinner. The next day we went to the beach on Assateague and got our first peek at the Ponies. Mom and I surveyed the bunch and picked out a few foals that particularly interested us. Pictures of the ponies in pen are the top 2 pictures on right. Wednesday morning we awoke at 6am to go and watch the ponies swim from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island. One little filly decided that swimming was not her cup of tea and gave the Salt-water cowboys a run for their money. They did finally catch her and ferried her across. After an hour rest, the ponies were herded down the the streets of town to the carnival grounds.
Thursday morning we awoke at 6 am again, this time to get good seats for the pony auction. My strategy was to bid on every pinto until I got one. Well as all good plans go, 15 minutes into the auction, the first one I bid on, I got! He is a little palamino and white colt, the spitting image of Misty and her foal Stormy. So with my wonderful little baby, I switched between buying another or staying put. I had really had my heart set on a filly, but was happy with my little colt.
Well two thirds of the way through the auction my mother mentions off hand that she would have given me $500 dollars to buy another, but since I was done bidding. . . Well I turn to my brother's girlfriend and ask "Want to throw in $500 and get a pony?" she says OK and we are back in the fray yet again. This time I was only going to bid on pinto filly's and the next one that came up was all ours!!!! So now Myself, Casey Keenaghan, and my Mother are the proud owners of a beautiful filly.
So I have 2 Chincoteague Ponies! Both are only 2 months old and the cutest things you have ever seen. They have had a rough couple of days, but are settling nicely into their new home. Click on the picture on right to see general pony penning/swim/auction and my foals pictures!
